There are rumors going around that Microsoft plans to close its African Development Center (ADC) located in Lagos, Nigeria.
The management of Microsoft reportedly notified employees on Monday of the closure and said that all impacted employees might receive their wages and Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs) through June.
Although the exact reasons behind the decision are yet unknown, Nigeria’s difficult economic circumstances probably had some influence.
The ADC shutdown affects operations in Nigeria and not in its other site located in Nairobi, Kenya.
Microsoft established locations in Lagos and Nairobi as part of its $100 million African Development Centers plan, which was introduced in 2019.
Upon opening in 2022, the Nigeria center employed more than 120 engineers, eventually hiring over 200 people in total.
The ADC aimed to facilitate the creation of tech solutions that will solve both African and global problems.
