Members of the House of Representatives, Federal Republic of Nigeria have pledged to donate 50% of their salaries for six months to address hunger across the country.
The session, presided over by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, saw Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu amend a motion to urge his colleagues to make this sacrifice.
Kalu, taking his turn to speak, appealed for support from fellow members, stating, “This government is doing its best but one year is not enough to address the challenges of this country. I want to plead with our colleagues to sacrifice 50 per cent for a period of six months.”
He continued, “Our salary is N600,000 a month. I want to plead that we let go of 50 per cent of our salary for a period of six months.”
With each member contributing ₦300,000 monthly, the legislative chamber will be donating ₦108 million per month to the Federal Government, totaling ₦648 million over six months.
